How are buy-to-let mortgages different?

With buy-to-let, you’re a different type of mortgage holder because your property is an investment rather than a home. So it’s understandable that the terms for most buy-to-let mortgages are stricter than standard types, and there are some key points to bear in mind before taking the plunge.

Buy-to-let mortgages tend to have higher fees and interest rates than other kinds of mortgages. You’re also likely to be required to pay a higher deposit, often between 20% and 40% of the property purchase price. Our specialist advisers can help you to navigate these complexities.

Are there tax issues for me to consider?

Once you’ve successfully bought your buy-to-let property and have rented it out to a tenant, any rental payments you receive are subject to Income Tax. The amount you’re charged will depend on your tax band, and you’ll need to report this on a self-assessment tax return.
